Ingredients
Scale:
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
2 ½ cups granulated sugar
1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
3 large eggs
1 ½ cups whole milk
½ cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 ½ cups boiling water
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
4 cups powdered sugar
¼ cup heavy cream
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Food coloring in various vibrant colors
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until thoroughly combined.
Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Using a hand mixer, beat on medium speed for 2 minutes until smooth.
Carefully stir in the boiling water. The batter will be thin.
Pour equal amounts of the batter into the prepared cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Once baked, remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
While the cakes are cooling, prepare the abstract frosting. Beat the softened butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla extract.
Divide the frosting into bowls and add different food colorings to each one.
Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top, then position the second layer and frost the entire cake.
Apply the colored frostings artistically to create an abstract design.
Let the cake sit for about 30 minutes to set the frosting before slicing and serving.
